Spend Your FSA/HSA and Vision Insurance Benefits Before the Year Ends

Our Philadelphia Eye Doctors at Trend Eye Care Want to Remind You to Spend Your FSA/HSA and Vision Insurance Benefits Before the Year Ends

As your trusted Philadelphia eye doctors, Trend Eye Care is always looking for ways to better serve our patients. One thing we've noticed is that a lot of patients with vision insurance don't really understand their benefits or how they work; this is especially true among those with an HSA or FSA. HSA and FSA plans can be quite confusing, but we're here to help.

Understanding FSA/HSA and Vision Insurance Benefits from Our Optometrists

FSA and HSAs are both types of health savings/spending accounts; an FSA (flexible spending account) allows you to use pre-tax dollars to pay for medical expenses, including eligible eye care costs. A health savings account (HSA) is a tax-free savings account set up by you and your employer; each month, you contribute a certain amount to your HSA and your employer may also contribute), and this money can be used exclusively for eligible medical expenses, including eye care.

A vision insurance policy will cover some basic eye care needs. This includes one comprehensive eye exam for each calendar year, in addition to a pair of prescription glasses or an allowance for a contact lens prescription. Depending on your specific coverage, additional services and eye wear, such as glasses with anti-glare coatings or certain types of contact lenses, may not be entirely covered and may need to come out of your HSA or FSA account. Check with your health care provider to determine your coverage, in addition to any deductibles or co-pays.

Have You Used Your Vision Benefits This Year?

Another important thing to keep in mind regarding your FSA and HSA benefits is that they do not roll over from one year to the next. If you don't use your benefits, they'll expire on the 1st of the year and you will not get those dollars back to use in 2017. This is why it's highly recommended that you use your vision benefits before the end of the year to ensure your eyes are healthy and that your corrective vision prescription is up-to-date. You're paying for this coverage; why not put it to use?
